Gesture Driven UI:  A novel Way of Interaction

Designers usually seem to strive hard to make the user experience better with minimal web designs and enhanced navigation. To teach the user for taking certain actions if you add two or three buttons below each image then the website will be more likely as mess which will be difficult to handle.
Now the latest solution to this problem is gesture driven UI which has become popular in mobile applications.

What is gesture driven UI?

It is imperative to design the responsive websites which run seamlessly on varying screen sizes. The gesture UI enables the users to perform different actions like tap, swipe, drag and others to interact on the website with convenience.
The purpose of gestures is to have a powerful control which feels intuitive and natural. The gestures are not visible to the users so you have to give a clue to the users or unless they will unaware of it.

Watch for your requirements when design:

There are various types of gestures as:
  • Tap
  • Double tap
  • Swipe
  • Slide
  • Hold
  • Flick
  • Drag
  • Pan
  • Rotate
  • Pinch
  • Stretch
  • Press and tap/ Press and drag

When you are going to use interactive gestures in your application, you should have knowledge of the market, your competitors and the look what your target audience is using.
Your target audience is used to show the same behaviours unintentionally for a specific type of interactions. When you think about doing something new, keep in mind that gesture-driven UI is based on the natural actions of people so gestures should not be so out of the league that your audience could not understand it.

Guide the users to take a specific action:

As the gesture is a sort of ‘learned’ element so you should teach or educate the users about it. The commonly used guides are:

1- Give them instructions in the text:

It is could be just the written hints or both the text commands with a visual clue. It usually appears at the beginning of the application with short and clear words which help the user to take the desired action.

2- Visual hints:

It is a mixture of text and animation. The written text will help the user understand and the animation shows how to do it if the user could not get it in text form.

3- Use animations:

The animation is the most popular and the clear way to guide the user about what to do next. It shows the preview of how to interact with the element while actually perform the action.

4- Bounces or pulses:

It is commonly used for educating the people about using different features of mobile devices. For example, in Nokia Windows Mobile, the screen bounces up to show the upward motion for call receiving.
